In the past few years I have become very interested in photography. Last year I got my first DSLR. Those of you who own a DSLR know that the camera purchase is a big ticket item in itself. Unfortunately (or fortunately for canon, depends how you look at it) you can’t stop there. I chose to purchase only the camera body, which means I still had lenses and all the other fun accessories to purchase.
While traveling, I quickly realized that I needed a more compact camera for certain occasions. A couple months ago I purchased a Leica D-lux 4, which is by far the best compact camera I have ever shot with.
Most of the pictures seen on this blog will be taken with either a iPhone 3Gs, a Leica D-Lux 4 or a Canon T1i DSLR. The latter will most likely be used with a Sigma 30mm f/1.4, a Canon 50mm f/1.8 or a Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8, all three excellent lenses.
When posting pictures I’ll try to note which camera was used, but the iPhone and Leica will likely be the most common.
Hope you guys like the pictures.
In the last entry I talked about the Leica D-Lux 4’s portability. With portability comes limitations. The 24-60mm 1:2.0-2.8/5.1-12.8 ASPH is a beautiful wide angle lens, it does fall short on optical zoom providing only 2.5x magnification. This is to be expected from a wide aperture lens. You can however extend the optical zoom with a couple aftermarket parts.
The first thing you will need is a lens adapter, next you will need a new lens. I chose to go with the one from WestCoastCameras most reviews I read point to this one.
All for under $100 you can add about 2x magnification to you Leica D-Lux 4. I will be posting pictures taken with these attachments soon.
Go take some pics! :-)
Yesterday I spent most of the day practice packing for the trip. We will be carrying our entire lives in our backpack. Packing is a difficult task. Spending a couple of months on the road requires a lot of stuff. Yet you have to take a lot less than you think you will need. Items quickly add up and the weight and bulk is an important factor to remember. I have heard from many people that you end up getting rid one third of the items you initially packed in the first few weeks.
I took pictures of everything for keepsake and insurance purposes. These items are pretty much all the stuff I will be taking on the trip around the world, with possibly a few minor changes in the upcoming 2 weeks (very likely some reduction).
They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Today, I want to share some of details of our trip research, particularly related to the equipment we are taking, so I decided to share some pictures as well.
We have done a lot of research leading up to this trip and we needed a place to record it all. We use 37signals’ appropriately named Backpack application to organize the info.
A good friend of mine asked me to write about the packing process. How I plan to pack my backpack for the long trip. I shot a couple pictures today of the packing stages as well as a compilation of all the items I will be taking.
