My first instinct was to deny the title of this post. There is no way that *everyone* I disagree with teaches me a life lesson.
That was my first mistake. It’s not about disagreements. It’s about passionate personal battles. You know the kind that keeps you up at night. The kind where you hate the person, albeit for a short amount of time. The kind that you catch yourself thinking about 5 or 10 years after it passed?
They leave a mark, sooner of later you realize how much you learned from that person. Sooner or later you stumble upon an occasion when you actually get to reciprocate the action in a similar manner to somebody else, in hopes they will learn the same life lesson. The uncomfortable encounters and experiences you had in the past quickly turn into life lessons.
Don’t believe me? Think about your last boss? Or someone you spent a lot of time interacting with in the past. Remember how annoyed you used to get when you were treated a certain way? Remember how much of a hypocrite you thought they were from time to time?
What about now? Do you still think the same way?
Humans are much, much more likely to remember the good than the bad. The bad makes us feel worse. We take what was pain, disagreement and hate and turn it into a life lesson. We also learn from every experience we live, specially those that scarred us the most.
